How we chose these five.
This guide reflects research into 30+ UK-accessible sleep supplement brands. Four criteria:
- Magnesium form. Glycinate/bisglycinate prioritised over citrate, oxide, and other forms.
- Dose accuracy. Stated mg verified against label and where possible third-party testing.
- UK accountability. UK Companies House registration, GMP certification, findable corporate presence.
- Value per month. Price per 30-day supply.
Sleep hygiene matters more.
Before buying any supplement: the behavioural sleep interventions — consistent timing, dark room, cool room, screens-off, caffeine cutoff by 2pm — outperform any supplement in the existing literature. Our full sleep guide covers this. Supplements are complements to proper sleep hygiene, not substitutes for it.
When to see your GP.
If sleep problems persist for more than four weeks, or you have symptoms like loud snoring, excessive daytime sleepiness, or restless legs, see your GP. Your GP has access to CBT-I (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia) which outperforms any supplement in the literature.
A note on melatonin
Melatonin is a prescription-only medicine in the UK. If you think you need it — particularly for jet lag or shift-work sleep disruption — speak to your GP. Products bought from overseas retailers are not regulated by UK authorities and label accuracy has been repeatedly questioned in independent testing.
